As the time approaches for you to move into your new place, you’ll probably be super excited and look forward to the moment when you’ll be sleeping in your new bed. Maybe your new home is closer to your job, or in a neighbourhood you always wanted to live in. However, are you 100% sure that your new place is ready? Before you get comfortable and settled in, here are a few things you should keep in mind.
Clean up, Thoroughly
To be honest, you never know just how thoroughly the house has been cleaned prior to your arrival, or if it has been cleaned at all. Some people don’t bother to clean every corner when moving out because they count on the next owner doing it. This is the main reason why you should give every surface a deep clean. The best time to do this is just before the furniture is brought in since you’ll have easy access to every corner. Disinfect and scrub the washing machine and dishwasher, clean out the oven, as well as freezer fridge. If your new home is too big to do this on your own, don’t hesitate to hire cleaning services or call some friends to help you.
Prepare for Unpacking
Walk through your clean, empty house, and label rooms with numbers so that when your things arrive you can tell people to put it in ‘Room 1’ or ‘Room 3’. With big items such as indoor benches it’s a good idea to mark the place where they should be placed with chalk or some tape.Boxes with fragile items, such as your grandma’s china, should be placed on tables or in corners and not moved around a lot. Unless you’ve hired the movers to help you unpack, don’t try to unpack everything at once. Know what you should unpack first: dishes, cutlery, towels, toiletries, toys for your kids, and food for your pet.
Change the Locks
While it may seem like an irrelevant thing which you should take care of later, you should change the locks before you move in, and not later. Previous owners may have given the keys to relatives, old friends, and neighbours just in case, but you don’t want to worry about who else has access to your home other than you. Locks on exterior doors should be changed as soon as you close the deal and sign the contract. This will give you some peace of mind and it also shows that this house is yours from this day on.
Get New Window Treatments
The one thing you will definitely need from the first moment you set foot in your new home is some privacy. As a temporary solution you can get some inexpensive shades, but later on, you can even go as far as to have them custom made just for you. Not only are shades great for privacy, but they will warm up the place and get that nice finishing touch. They are one of those little things that really make a difference and truly make a house feel more like home.
Preparing to move in a new place is not easy, and you will surely need some time to adjust and get settled. Safety should always be your number one priority, so make sure to double check everything before you get settled. Even if it seems like too much work, you will be grateful later when you fall asleep peacefully knowing that your family is safe.
